The Blank Slate: Full Time or Freelance?

The Blank Slate: Full Time or Freelance?

One of the most appealing aspects of being a graphic designer is the flexibility it offers in regards to employment. You might be an in-house designer for a larger corporation, a member of a design team working for an agency, or maybe even your own boss working as a freelance designer or head of your own small studio. Either way, each position requires it’s own set of skills and personality types.

You may work better as a member of a team doing your part to contribute to a project, or you may prefer to work on your own and call the shots as to what projects you accept or decline. Both positions have their pros and cons. Working full time provides a steady paycheck, but can place a designer in a repetitive roll which doesn’t always work well with a creative individual. Working as a freelancer has lots of freedoms, but lacks the stability of full time work.

Either way… I’m curious what type of positions most of our readers hold.

I have mentioned before that I maintain most of the media jobs for local wrestling, and while it’s near full time, I still have some spare time here and there for free lance work. Im happy with what im doing though. Im happier with full time, keeps me busy and keeps change in my pocket on a constant basis.

I am freelancing for 2yrs and half and it gives me good income :)

  3. I would be happy either way – I currently balance studying for complete an MA with freelance designing.

I think an in-house position is good in that it gets you to work faster, and gets you used to completing things regularly

I actually do both! I work a full time job as a webmaster and have a side gig building ecommerce websites and print work like tshirt design and flyers. In this economy you need all the help you can get!

I’ve been designing for 7 years now. 3 month ago, I quit my corporate 9-5 full time job because it was extremely stressful and limited my creativity only to be my own boss and things been great for me. i don’t regret that decision.

  7. It’s really very complex in this full of activity life to listen news on
TV, therefore I only use internet for that reason, and take the newest news.
