The Blank Slate: Designing for a Niche Market

The Blank Slate: Designing for a Niche Market

The thing I love most about being a designer is not knowing what your next job might be. I’ve worked on a project for a fishing lodge in Alaska and labels for Lego toys both at the same time. Being a designer can be an extremely versatile job. Who could get bored with such a variety of work?

The Blank Slate: Where is Design Going?

The Blank Slate: Where is Design Going?

Some of us started years ago as print designers, and either by choice or by force we converted from print to digital design and web technologies. And from the web we’re now converting to mobile devices. It’s where the industry has lead us. It’s ever growing and ever changing, and your ability as a designer to adapt to that change directly effects your success. Where we are now, as an industry, and where we are going in the coming years is likely two very different places.

The Blank Slate: Full Time or Freelance?

The Blank Slate: Full Time or Freelance?

One of the most appealing aspects of being a graphic designer is the flexibility it offers in regards to employment. You might be an in-house designer for a larger corporation, a member of a design team working for an agency, or maybe even your own boss working as a freelance designer or head of your own small studio. Either way, each position requires it’s own set of skills and personality types.

The Blank Slate: Your Best Client Ever!

The Blank Slate: Your Best Client Ever!

Whether your design career is just starting out or is seasoned with experience, I guarantee there is one client that sticks out in your mind as the best. This is the client that you enjoy or enjoyed working with the most. You really jived well together, and every effort that you put forward was a home run. Maybe this client was simply a pleasure to work for, or maybe the client was a huge name that looked sexy in your portfolio. Either way, it raises the question:

The Blank Slate: How Do You Use Social Media?

As a designer today, there are sooo many different ways to get your work out to the masses. Within minutes you can post a new portfolio piece and have hundreds or maybe even thousands of people view and comment on it. But this also means that we’re all on an equal playing field. Large firms are competing for views with mid-level and even novice designers.

Become a Self-Made Graphic Designer – Run Your Own Business

Become a Self-Made Graphic Designer – Run Your Own Business

It was 3 years ago when I started to think about becoming a graphic designer. Well, that’s what I am now. I did not go to design school because I preferred to use the vast amount of resources that the web offers and experiment with new techniques by myself. In this 3 article series I would like to share my experiences with all those that are approaching the graphic design world, and provide suggestions on how to find the best resources and how to avoid errors. Today we will talk about the difficulties and satisfactions that are behind the realization of a successful business.

The Blank Slate: How Did You Learn Design?

The Blank Slate: How Did You Learn Design?

I graduated from the Art Institute back in 2000, and set out into the world to become a Graphic Designer. But what I found was that no employer cared where I went to school or what degree I held. They were only interested in my design experience and what my portfolio contained. Since I had no real world experience, my portfolio contained very little professional examples of my work, only personal or student projects.
