Graphic designers shall have a unique style

Graphic designers community is growing up rapidly. Thanks to web support everyday thousands of people are able to improve their skills and techniques. It is a everybody dream to turn this knowledge into a full time job. The question is: how to emerge to be apart from the crowd?

What I like of this field is that to become a professional graphic designer it’s not necessary to have a special school title. With that said I don’t mean that graphic schools would be vain to attempt. I’m simply saying that if you have qualities you will work, if you have talent you will be noted and certainly you will be required to work on projects without you will be questioned about your studies background. For this reason a larger number of people, especially young, have the ambition to work in this sector, giving hard push to the market competition. In a competitive market who stands up is only who offers something unique.

The importance of style

Our work style is what enables us to be different from others.

What is style in graphic design? It’s what allows your work to be recognizable among one thousands of works.

The style concept is connected to identity. A unique style testimonies a strong identity thereby a winning brand. When a client decides to hire a graphic designer, it already has an idea of the final result, because it choose to marry the graphic designer’s style to the product.

How to create your own style

It’s a natural process. You can not impose to yourself the frequently use of swirls and flowers in your works. You shall like them!
If you are a young graphic designer looking for your identity, I will suggest to start observing the well known graphic designers’ works. To create inspiring to others doesn’t mean to copy, instead it could be the mean to explore the graphics world. It is up to you to experiment and work until you will find the style you think best represents you.

Are you serious? Are u saying that repeating the same work over and over again is called graphic design?

Non of them that are featured here are graphic designers. Expect for Adhemas Batista theres nothing fresh about any of these guys work. Their works have been emulated by so many other so called “designers” that they actually don’t look the same.

The designer who is a real designer doesn’t rely on so call “style” AKA: photoshop trick but someone who approach all designs with a different view and a different unique solution. Thats what good designers do. No keep doing the same thing over and over again. Its clear u dont really have any idea about graphic design.

    • Where did I suggest young designers to repeat the same work over and over again? Maybe you make confusion with the concept of style. To have a style doesn’ t mean to do always the same things.
Let me show a great designer/artist/architect without a recognizable style.

Its clear you don’t really love constructive criticism.

      • Jayson

I actually agree with “idontwannasoundlikeajerk” on this one. Except for James White, the rest would be more considered as Graphic Artists rather than Graphic Designers. Some of the artworks presented are so subjective that they aren’t really considered solutions. These are indeed “great graphics,” but I wouldn’t consider them great designs.

I think this is a great topic. It’s just that the examples that were selected weren’t so great. Perhaps an alternative post that would still be relevant to the topic of style is to feature designers such as say David Carson, or Shepard Fairey, or Stefan Sagmeister. They have their “own distinct style” that separates them from the rest.

      • Hi Jayson,

Thanks for stopping by. Yes you mentioned great graphic designers, I will certainly include them into a new article where I’ll go in depth with the concept of style

  6. Great look into the variations that make each of these designers unique. Thanks for posting.

  7. good post, really love the work displayed here.

now the main part, i would agree and disagree with few things mentioned above.

1st its definitely a huge boost if you have a unique style which anyone can recognize from thousand artworks. this brings to the question of if Graphic designer should have a single unique style. NO.
Because as a Graphic designer you will be placed in different situations to deal with different client’s needs. and if you have same style as a solution then different brands will look similar.
BUT as a GRAPHIC “ARTIST” you should definitely have a UNIQUE style, this will bring you the clients who would like to see your style in their art work.
so if you are an G.ARTIST have a unique style but as a designer get exposed to every thing, your solution can lie in different styles depending on clients needs.

  8. Thanks for the great article.
